Vehicle Ownership Transfer Online (2026)
Planning to buy or sell a used vehicle? Before you can rightfully own and drive it, you must complete the Transfer of Ownership process with the RTO. This involves updating the Registration Certificate (RC) to reflect the new owner's name.
How to Transfer Vehicle Ownership (2026)
The process of transferring vehicle ownership is now online via the Vahan Parivahan portal. You must apply for transfer within 14 days of the sale (within same state) or 45 days (inter-state).
Important: Both Parties Needed
Ideally, both the seller (Transferor) and the buyer (Transferee) should complete the process together to avoid any legal liabilities later.
- Visit Vahan Portal: Go to the official Vahan portal and select 'Online Services' > 'Vehicle Related Services'.
- Enter Vehicle Number: Input the registration number and the last 5 digits of the Chassis Number.
- Generate OTP: An OTP will be sent to the registered owner's mobile number.
- Select 'Transfer of Ownership': This specific service option will appear once validated.
- Fill Details: Complete the Form 29 (Notice of Transfer) and Form 30 (Report of Transfer) details online. Enter the new owner's details.
- Pay Fees: Pay the transfer fee online.
- Upload Documents: Upload signed copies of Form 29, 30, Sale Receipt, Address Proof of Buyer, Insurance, PUC, etc.
- Visit RTO (if required): In some states, physical verification of documents or the vehicle may be needed. Book an appointment if prompted.
